Every September at the Hudson Valley Wine & Food festival a wine competition is held. Many wineries across the region enter their wines to test their mettle against others, in the hope of picking up medals along the way. The ultimate award – Winery of the Year – is given to the winery with the highest scoring wines overall. We’re thrilled to announce due to a strong showing of our wines, Tousey won Winery of the Year!
When Kimberly and I first started this journey over 8 years ago, this competition wasn’t even on our radar let alone have it as a goal to aspire to. The only thing we did know was, we wanted to produce top quality wine. This quest has taken us on a journey that I wouldn’t have dreamed possible. We’ve had the privilege to meet many people from all walks of life. We’ve drank with them. Worked with them. Managing the vineyards has been a truly humbling experience. Constantly at the mercy of the weather, wild animals and insects – farming isn’t for the faint hearted. I once asked a veteran vineyard manager how he coped for 30 years growing grapes when you’re never far away from a weather event wiping out your whole crop, “I wear brown pants,” he said followed by a laugh.
This year we have seen some big changes at the winery. Our tasting room has tripled in size. The cafe opened in March and continues to go from strength to strength. Our new event space Tousey @ The Tin Barn is complete and currently taking bookings. And now this, the “Winery of the Year’ award!
It would be a remiss not to mention Peter Bell. He is not only just a brilliant mind and a wonderful mentor, but a dear friend. I would never have understood the beauty and complexity of winemaking if it wasn’t for him. And since I’m turning this into an oscar speech, I must mention Ray Tousey. You know him as the honey guy but to us he’s been our number one supporter and cheerleader. Uber thanks to all our staff for your hardworking, fun spirited, pizazz. It makes all the grind worth it. Lastly, but not least, a huge thank you to all our customers who have been with us all along. We truly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you guys.
The fun, however, doesn’t stop here. Harvest is upon us. The tanks and barrels have been emptied eagerly awaiting their new occupants. Plus we’re super excited to be hosting our next event @ The Tin Barn. Not to mention, having to figure out which costumes we’re wearing for the Halloween party! We hope to see you there.
